Members attended the March meeting of the County Monaghan Network of Tidy Towns Groups and Residents Associations in Castleblayney on Tuesday March 12th, where a lot of planning was done in anticipation of the annual Tidy Towns competition. It was brought to our attention the the judging category previously known as "Waste Minimisation" will now be known as "Sustainable Waste and Resource Management". We will review what the changes entail over the next few weeks, and what it will mean for waste reduction in our community.
The annual clean up of local roads, streets, hedges, open areas, and farm boundaries will take place on Saturday 13th April 2013. We look forward to getting the usual great support from our local organisations and community. A skip will be available for all rubbish collected.

The next meeting of the Tidy Towns network will take place on Tuesday 12th March. It is hoped that at least 2 members of our Tidy Towns committee will attend.
Scotstown Tidy Towns has registered with An Taisce for the annual Spring Clean. By registering we will receive a Clean Up Kit for use in the area which includes: Protective tabards for adults and children to keep clothes clean, colour coded plastic bags for recyclable and non-recyclable waste, and gloves to keep hands safe and clean. Monaghan County Council also assists the effort and may be able to provide extra materials and skip collection. We encourage schools, clubs, individuals and families to get involved and register themselves on the website, so that they too can get involved at whatever time suits them. Register online as soon as possible at: http://www.nationalspringclean.org/ Work on the low wall past the bridge has now finished, and doesn't it look well! Thanks to John McPhillips for his painstaking work and patience, a job well done. We look forward to planting around this area later in the season. Attention has now turned to an area outside St Dympna's Terrace, on the Monaghan side of the village, where John is building another stone wall. Work also continues with the 3 roomed extension at Urbleshanny N.S. However, we look forward to the school moving into their permanent classrooms, and a green flag in the playground as a reward for all their efforts and cooperation with the Tidy Towns committee down the years. A Green Schools committee meeting took place on 31st January to prepare for evaluation for the Green Flag. A lot of work has been done by the teachers and students during the year, and all seven of the steps have been carefully followed. Among the projects were clean up days, printer, battery and mobile phone recycling, recycled art, Bin Sheriffs, a reduction in photocopying, composting, recycled art, and linked curriculum work. It has been a wonderful journey and the school has enjoyed the cooperation of parents, teaching and caretaking staff, local residents, Tidy Towns groups and businesses in the area. The amount of waste going to landfill has been significantly reduced. We wish them well in the endeavour to get the first ever Green Flag to Tydavnet parish. Litter picking continues when the weather is nice. All five approach roads are done (if necessary) a few times a week. There has been a significant reduction in the amount of litter discarded, and we hope this continues into the summer. Members of Ballinode Tidy Towns group assist our efforts on the Scotstown to Ballinode road, both groups share the job of keeping the road litter free by picking as far as Kilmore GAA grounds. We also thank the football club for their cooperation in keeping their grounds very well at Kilmore and at the "Home" ground in Scotstown village. This cooperation is also very evident in the community support for the promotion of Gaeilge. The "Ciorcal Gaeilge" venue is provided by the club, and many member of the Tidy Towns committee attend and assist this fun way to learn Irish in a no hassle, no homework environment. We also appreciate the involvement of all residents and businesses in Scotstown in the Tidy Towns work. Recently, Scotstown Pharmacy introduced bilingual writing on it's packaging, a great initiative. We also commend the pharmacy and the office of Aughnashalvey Group Water Scheme Ltd for displaying the entries for the annual poster competition in their windows. Congratulations to Mackie Rooney, one of the members of Scotstown Tidy Towns committee, who was recently nominated for Volunteer of the Year in the Monaghan Integrated Development Ltd's "Making Monaghan a better place" awards. Although not the overall winner on the night, it was great to be nominated for the enthusiasm and commttment he and the others on the committee give by participating in community and charity activities in the area. Many members of the community and Tidy Towns committee attended the awards night in the Iontas Theatre, Castleblayney on Monday 19th November. The results of the SuperValu national Tidy Towns competition were announced yesterday, and well done to the overall winners Abbeyshrule in Longford. Congratulations to the overall winners in County Monaghan, Glaslough, Carrickmacross and Inniskeen who all received medals for their endeavours, and well done to Monaghan town who increased their mark by 21 points. Scotstown is justifiably proud to have increased by 13 points on last year's total, so we feel we have got recognition for the upgrade work that was carried out during the year. Thanks to all the residents, visitors to the village, and our community workers for helping us improve every year, your cooperation is very much appreciated. When the competition is over... and we have won no prizes.... at the end of the day we have what we set out to achieve, a lovely village with great community spirit and pride, all year round.
