A Green Schools committee meeting took place on 31st January to prepare for evaluation for the Green Flag. A lot of work has been done by the teachers and students during the year, and all seven of the steps have been carefully followed. Among the projects were clean up days, printer, battery and mobile phone recycling, recycled art, Bin Sheriffs, a reduction in photocopying, composting, recycled art, and linked curriculum work. It has been a wonderful journey and the school has enjoyed the cooperation of parents, teaching and caretaking staff, local residents, Tidy Towns groups and businesses in the area. The amount of waste going to landfill has been significantly reduced. We wish them well in the endeavour to get the first ever Green Flag to Tydavnet parish.
Litter picking continues when the weather is nice. All five approach roads are done (if necessary) a few times a week. There has been a significant reduction in the amount of litter discarded, and we hope this continues into the summer. Members of Ballinode Tidy Towns group assist our efforts on the Scotstown to Ballinode road, both groups share the job of keeping the road litter free by picking as far as Kilmore GAA grounds. We also thank the football club for their cooperation in keeping their grounds very well at Kilmore and at the "Home" ground in Scotstown village. This cooperation is also very evident in the community support for the promotion of Gaeilge. The "Ciorcal Gaeilge" venue is provided by the club, and many member of the Tidy Towns committee attend and assist this fun way to learn Irish in a no hassle, no homework environment. We also appreciate the involvement of all residents and businesses in Scotstown in the Tidy Towns work. Recently, Scotstown Pharmacy introduced bilingual writing on it's packaging, a great initiative. We also commend the pharmacy and the office of Aughnashalvey Group Water Scheme Ltd for displaying the entries for the annual poster competition in their windows. |
